Concept
"Growing up, I used to be proud of my country, of being Ghanaian. This changed as I grew into who I was - you can't be Queer in Ghana without watching over your shoulder every day." - Roberta (she/her, 22), a queer Ghanaian, interviewed in April 2022.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family values is a private members bill sponsored by several Ghanaian MPs that aims to establish a system of state-sponsored discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ persons and their allies. If passed, the bill will outlaw LGBTQ+ Ghanaians and strip them off their fundamental human rights.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family values: A Protest - is a photo series documenting LGBTQ+ Ghanaians and their allies, and how they would be affected if this bill were to pass. The documentary seeks to promote acceptance, love and the community’s visibility through intimate portraiture of its members.
